Theodore could not bear walking like that an d he would often take his boots off and walk barefoot towards home. Although sometimes, the blades of corn leaves protruding towards the path and towards him, would cut gently through his skin as a knife with a jagged edge would cut a pinnate leaf, leaving linear marks on his arms. When he was a boy, Theodore recalled going home one day after school, passing through the fields, towards the end of the vast plantation where a lone Baroque-inspired mansion formidably stood. His house was the only structure that could be seen from afar - even if it was viewed from the hills or from the mountains or tens of kilometers away. Its red brick roof looked like a red piece of cloth on a yellow floor during that time of the year, as the plants were almost ready for harvest. The corn's golden kernels still sparkled under the setting sun casting a red glittery reflection on each bead. Almost everyday on his way home, as he approached his house, Theodore would always hear his mother playing music, humming a tune or fingering Wagner on the piano. He didn't know Wagner nor liked his music but his mother manipulated her favorite musical instrument with passion, a kind of ardor, which Theodore had never seen in someone else's fingers or behavior. Income Inequality Essay Minimum Wage Income inequality in America has become a big issue, one that many of us hear every day; whether on the news or from our parents. But normally, we donââ¬â¢t hear the actual phrase used. We hear things like ââ¬Å"the top two percent,â⬠or, the ââ¬Å"rich vs. the poor.â⬠So, what is income inequality? Income inequality is defined as the difference between individuals or populations in the distribution of their assets, wealth, or income. So, with that in mind, why would anyone be against raising a minimum wage? At first glance, the plan does seem to be an intelligent fix to a problem thatââ¬â¢s stayed dormant for quite a while. Raising the minimum wage drastically from where it was in 2009 to now would be a blunt and possibly inefficient way of continuing to attempt to give the poor a better way of life. There is one simple fact that many people simply donââ¬â¢t look at: there are more than one group of people working for minimum wage. There is a myriad of people working for the federal 7.50, from teenagers on their first jobs to older people with second jobs. Jonathon Guryan, an economist at Northwestern University and a neutral observer of the wage debate, said that ââ¬Å"Its not helping as many or as large a portion of the labor market as you probably would like.â⬠This being said, the workers that will benefit from a minimum wage increase would be so diverse that the group of people we are aiming to help, the poor and desperate, wouldnââ¬â¢t be getting all the help. Now, what of the small businesses and family companies that can hardly handle the current minimum wage? Well, theyââ¬â¢d be taking a hit too if a drastic increase such as this were to hit. Businesses that make less money than others in their profits per year are expected to have to cut down on their expenses and lay off their workforce in order to compensate for the loss of funds. So, while the minimum wage would benefit the people in the business lucky enough to not be laid off, those who were fired couldà be the very people we were attempting to help. Unfortunately, this could mean that a large part of the workforce that handles manual labor could be out of the job. Other businesses would not even be that lucky. There are much better ways to fight income inequality than just simply raising the federal minimum wage. Itââ¬â¢s a very black and white argument for a topic that is not so black and white. To better improve our income equality, and therefore lift people out of poverty, we could be putting more funding into things like education, food stamps and the Earned Income Tax Credit (or the EITC), which is a refundable tax credit targeting people who make a low income. It would be a shame to not only miss a chance to reduce poverty now, but to forget that weââ¬â¢ll all be having this same conversation in a few years if we just raise the minimum wage. That being said, I donââ¬â¢t believe the federal minimum wage should be raised to $10.00 per hour.

Four Stroke Internal Combustion Engines The 4-stroke, internal combustion engine at the heart of most automobiles on the road today is relatively inefficient and produces high levels of pollutants. Even the most efficient gasoline burning internal combustion engines convert only 30-40% of the energy available in the fuel in to work. The rest of the energy is lost to heat, and is thrown away into the environment through a heat exchanger (radiator) or through exhaust gases. Exhaust gases account for much of the pollution generated by internal combustion engines. Gasoline, for example produces Greenhouse gases such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOxââ¬â¢s) and releases unburned hydrocarbons (fuel) into the atmosphere. Greenhouse Gases are responsible for much of the depletion of the ozone layer, lead to global warming and pose health threats to humans. Peaceful End of Life Theory This paper is written to examine Corneila Ruland and Shirley Mooreââ¬â¢s Peaceful End of Life Theory and its examination on promoting positive outcomes for patients and their families during the dying process. Also, examine how the theory is understood in the Christian view as well as viewing ethical principles. As a Critical Care nurse I care for the dying patient mostly on a daily basis. During this process, I not only want to care for the dying but, I want to learn how I can ease the pain and heart break of the family.During my study of Theory and Ethics, I discovered Cornelia M. Ruland and Shirley M. Mooreââ¬â¢s Peaceful End of Life Theory. This theory shows how theory addresses the holistic care required to support a peaceful end of life. I found this theory to be useful by being free of the suffering of distress, providing comfort, respect as a human being, having peace and by being with those who care. (Martha Raile Alligood, PhD, RN, ANEF, An n Marriner Tomey, PhD, RN, FAAN, 2010). Ruland and Moore theorize that with easing fears of death, it can be a peaceful end of life event.Not just by providing daily needs and task but, also by caring for the dying (2010, p. 754). Many factors contribute to end of life situations for all patients, families, and health care providers. During the Peaceful End of Life Theory the standard of care is based on research in areas of pain management, comfort for the patient, nutritional needs for the patient, and relaxation needs (2010, p. 755). These factors are influenced by age, history of illness, religious values, and heath care concerns. Most of our efforts as humans are to improve our quality of life.Understanding the importance of having a peaceful transition into another stage of life is beneficial. Death is always inevitable and always a factor in the lives of family members facing such a stressful time. We should strive to help minimize pain and suffering at the end of our lifeâ⠬â¢s journey with peace and comfort. Providing comfort is the most important part of quality care with an advanced illness. Within the peaceful EOL theory there are major concepts that are examined and reviewed by patients that are in the dying process. EOL care focuses primarily on comfort when a cure is no longer possible.Also, being free of pain is mostly the central part of many patients going through the EOL experience. A treatment plan should take place when a patient is experiencing pain. Becoming pain free is one of the major concerns of people dying (Dunn, 2001). To have peace with yourself and your loved one, you must distinguish your pain from their pain. Showing respect and having dignity helps the patient feel that they are still loved and cherished as individuals. Having peace with the decisions they have made and the outcome helps the patient transition over into the EOL concept.I feel that if a patient is not at peace with death and dying then it makes it extremely hard for the family. If a patient is having no worries or fears to leave this earth, then they are physically ready, psychologically ready and spiritually ready to face the end of their life. The last concept to talk about is being close to their families in a trying time (2010, p. 756). Feeling at peace and having closeness to others helps the patient transition peacefully which could be the scariest part of dying. During any point of illness patients and families need to be prepared emotionally and spiritually for death (Dunn, 2001).Ruland and Moore identified six theoretical assertions for the peaceful end of life theory that include: monitoring and administering pain meds, getting family involved in decision making regarding decisions that need to be made for the patient, relieving physical discomfort by encouraging rest periods, relaxation, provide support to the patient and family members, encourage family participation with patient care and last, monitoring the patients comf ort, dignity and respect (2010, p. 757). Critique Clarity In the peaceful end of life theory all of its theory has been covered and has clearly been understood.The assumption of the theory, that providing comfort for the patient allows a better transition into the stages of the end of life to supporting the family through difficult times shows how the concept varies in different degrees, but are all important to the theory (2010, p. 758). Simplicity The EOL theory has been described as one of the higher levels of middle range theories. It focuses on what is important to the patient at the end of life and how the patient views life. It also has several different aims and aspects on how one values the comfort and dignity throughout the rest of their life (2010, p. 59). Generality The peaceful end of life theory concept came from a Norwegian context that based a study on the dying. The theory is based on not being in pain, the experience of comfort, having dignity and respect, being at peace, and allowing the patient to be close to significant others. This theory allows the standards to guide a person through the peaceful end of life and allows the family to respond and adapt (2010, p. 759). Empirical Precision Each part of the peaceful end of life concept is based on the inductive and reasonable part of guiding the practice.With the EOL theory its five concepts measured were mixed. Its observations were based on the patient and family perceptions of their care with the decisions made during the dying process (2010, p. 760). In the empirical precision the EOL theory illustrates that the five concepts were beneficial to the patient and the family. As nurses dealing with end of life issues, we strive to take care of the personal values of the patient but, also the medical, legal, and ethical aspects of the decision process get in the way. Sorting through these issues helps to gain respect with the family.Conflicts may arise with EOL decisions, but establishing repo rt with the patient and families helps focus on the primary values of care (G. Leigh Wilkerson, 1995). Often timeââ¬â¢s ethical issues play a big role in EOL care. For example, withdrawing care from a mechanical intubated patient is a big ethical issue. Are we prolonging life or are we delaying death. A lot of times holding people on through mechanical ventilation is not ethical. Sometimes patients get dependent on mechanical ventilation which delays death then the family has to make decisions to withdraw care.We should respect our patientââ¬â¢s autonomy and allow them the freedom to make decisions for themselves. We should practice beneficence, fidelity, and non-malfeasance as health care providers. Holding on makes it harder on the patient and prolonging the inevitable (Simon, 2008). As a Christian, letting my patient die with respect and dignity would be a victory in our Saviors eyes. Life is a gift. There is a time in everybodyââ¬â¢s life that our body is not growing an d healing, but failing. This is when we enter into another phase of our life. Journey Representations through Texts and Visual Image Essay
From the area of study on journeys, several texts evidently provide and present ideas, concepts and themes on journeys. A journey can be considered a physical movement from one place to another, but there are much deeper meanings conveyed in a journey. This can be seen in two of the Peter Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s poems in the core text ââ¬ËImmigrant Chroniclesââ¬â¢. The poems ââ¬ËCrossing the Red Seaââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËFeliks Skzryneckiââ¬â¢ significantly convey the meaning of journeys. The poems with an internet article titled ââ¬ËJourneys: A Cycle of Sacred Timeââ¬â¢ and a journey related photograph influentially demonstrate how there is more to a journey than just physical movement. All these texts convey to the responder the many themes and concepts associated with journeys which at first sight seem physical, but actually also emotionally and spiritually affect the protagonist of the journey. In Peter Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËCrossing the Red Seaââ¬â¢ the poem tells us about the post-war immigrants leaving on board a ship sailing towards Australia. The poem catches the immigrant experience at a point between two worlds. The depiction of the great physical journey that these immigrants are taking also lets the responder see the inner journey involved for the immigrants. The techniques used in ââ¬ËCrossing the Red Seaââ¬â¢ help to convey its meaning of journeys to the responder. The biblical allusion in the title is appropriate to the Israelis being led out of repression in Egypt by Moses through the Red Sea, to the Promised Land. For the immigrants they are leaving war torn Europe to Australia, their land of promise. For the Israelis it was a journey of liberation from slavery and oppression. Similarly, the immigrants are escaping post-war tyranny in hope for a better future. Another bit of biblical allusion mentions some of the immigrants sensing they are born again, like Lazarus in the bible. Imagery also creates much of the meaning in this poem. The immigrants are described with ââ¬Ëmilk white fleshââ¬â¢ showing that they are sickly and seemingly unhealthy. Another piece of imagery is created through the colour red. Red is used in the poem to symbolise two extremes. ââ¬ËOf red poppies, once behind the forest when the full moon rose ââ¬â¢ ââ¬â these lines are used to describe the beauty of the flowers and creates an attractive scenery. But the next bit of dialogue contrasts the beauty of red by using the colour to describe blood. The line ââ¬ËBlood leaves a similar darkà stainââ¬â¢ shows how red can be of beauty and good, but can also symbolise terrible tragedies, evil and death in the form of blood. The contrast shown in the colour in the poem is perhaps not only a piece of imagery, but a clear motif as it relates to the contrast of emotions of the immigrants. They are glad about new hope and beginning, but are sad and scared about leaving their home on this journey. Emotive language is used in the poem to trigger the responderââ¬â¢s emotions. Examples of emotive language include ââ¬Ëshacklesââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësunken eyesââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësecretsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëexilesââ¬â¢. All these words are used to describe the pain or suffering experienced by the immigrants prior to their journey. The language used also creates the feeling that the immigrants are leaving their homeland in disgrace because of the immense hardships that they have experienced. Alliteration is used in the line ââ¬Ëshirtless, in shortsââ¬â¢, emphasising the soft, quiet situation that the immigrants on board are in. The symbolism of the equator in the closing of the poem represents the boundary between their old home and their new beginning. The division of northern and southern hemisphere represents great change for the immigrants, both mentally and culturally, as their optimistic future and their new home are beckoning them. As the poem suggests there is more to a journey than the physical movement involved. The emotions of the immigrants are deeply explored and their inner journey is obvious to the responder. The journey here is not entirely optimistic and has deep emotional effects on the immigrants. Uncertainty is present and there are memories of the past as well as hope for the future. We learn how the previous experiences of the immigrants have affected their mental state. The main theme the poem is trying to convey about journeys is that a physical journey will tie in with the mental and spiritual side of the protagonist. This idea is similar to what we have discussed in class during this area of study. The protagonist of a journey will not only be affected physically but they may emotionally change, grow or learn new things. The poem ââ¬ËFeliks Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢ also conveys journeys as more than just physical movement from one place to another. In this poem Peter Skrzynecki discusses the life of his father Feliks Skrzynecki and the struggles involved in hisà journey migrating to Australia. The respect that Peter has for his father is evident in the poem but his perspective of the physical journey which they both took is different to his father. There are several poetic techniques used in the poem to convey meaning on journeys. Alliteration ââ¬â ââ¬Ëskilled in slaughteringââ¬â¢ describes his father who used to be a hard labourer and how his life was full of action. Many similes are also used to give us a clear description of Feliks Skrzynecki. He ââ¬Ëloved his garden like an only childââ¬â¢ ââ¬â this shows that he was a caring and devoted family man, to both his son and home. The lines ââ¬Ëfingers with cracks like the sods he brokeââ¬â¢ illustrates the extent of his old laborious life in Poland. Near the end of the poem the simile describing his father ââ¬Ëlike a dumb prophetââ¬â¢ expresses how his father knew that his son was moving further away from his heritage and there was nothing he could do about it. Descriptive language with words such as ââ¬Ëgentleââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ësoftnessââ¬â¢ reveal the tenderness of Feliks Skrzynecki, while on the other hand, emotive words such as violently, slaughtering and darkened expresses his rough life in the past and toughness of this man, not just physically, but also mentally. The images of his rough and damaged hands and how they ââ¬Ëdug cancer out of his footââ¬â¢ reveals the hardships he had had to endure and also show us the trauma and severity of his past. The symbolism of the son pegging his tents further and further south of Hadrianââ¬â¢s Wall shows that Peter Skrzynecki is moving away from his fatherââ¬â¢s eastern European culture into Australian culture. As the different perspectives of father and son are given in this poem we can see the inner journeys which they have both gone through. Feliks Skzrynecki has, in migrating to Australia, missed his old lifestyle, heritage and culture, while his son has grown up in a totally different world to the one his father has known, and the absence of the same heritage and culture has made father and son somewhat detached from each other. A clear theme in this poem is that the result of a journey can benefit the protagonist but can also generate sadness and misery as the protagonist misses his or her home. This is evident for Feliks Skrzynecki and ââ¬ËCrossing the Red Seaââ¬â¢ also has a similar concept with the immigrants in two states of mind. Clearly the poem reinforces the idea that a physical journey can very much be an inner one. The internet article ââ¬ËJourneys: A Cycle of sacred timeââ¬â¢ is very much a source which supports the ideas and concepts explored in the Skrzynecki poems. The article talks about how taking a trip, such as a holiday, is different to a journey. The article expresses that there is a great difference between just travelling and actually experiencing the journey. The article uses imagery to capture the responderââ¬â¢s attention. The article tells the responder to imagine you are at a holiday location and you are actually present with what you are experiencing rather than just keeping busy taking photos of sights. ââ¬ËJourney goes beyond the restraints of physical time and space. Journey feeds the soul.ââ¬â¢ This statement from the article describes the mental and inner process of learning and growth involved in journeys, and that physically your destination is insignificant. The article mentions that physical travel is not a prerequisite for journeying, again stating tha t it is the inner process that matters not the physical destination. Another theme expressed about journeys in the article is that a true journey cannot happen in isolation. Connecting with others is the way for experiencing your journey. This idea is somewhat in contrast to the concept of personal journeys we have studied. The importance of self-growth and learning about yourself is required in personal journeys, but this article is saying that to grow and learn, you need to communicate and correspond with other people. The article uses techniques such as imagery to stimulate the responderââ¬â¢s thoughts, large and bold writing for significant or important text and uses several quotes to support the themes it is trying to convey. The final source relating to journeys and conveying significant themes is a photograph showing a number of travelers in the middle of their journey on top of a large mountain. The number of large mountains in the background and the scenery suggests that the location is somewhere foreign and faraway from the protagonistsââ¬â¢ home. The protagonists in shadowy figures suggest some sense of mystery on this journey. This sense of mystery expresses inner journeying as well as the physical travel shown in the photo. The different contrast in colors of the foreground, middle of the image, and background show there are several parts or sections to a journey. The image of these protagonists journeying across a great landscape is comparable with the poemà ââ¬ËCrossing the Red Seaââ¬â¢ in the allusion the poem creates of journeys. The long shot taken of the protagonist also show that their journey is long and difficult and the sense of difficult journeys is similar to all three other sources. The theme of the physical journey providing an inner or imaginative experience is also evident in the photo, through the landscape and scenery, which seems surreal and dreamlike. Overall the sources discussed all hold important and valuable ideas and concepts on journeys, and they show us that journey is not just physical travel but also an emotional and inner experience.

While examining the differences and similarities of death and sleep the reader is left with some very thought provoking questions. The answers to these questions reassure some readers while confusing others. Sleep is a time of rest. It allows preparation for the next day or event, and by relating this definition to death Bryant gives new insight on oneââ¬â¢s fate after earthly existence. When identifying sleep with death Bryant gives death many characteristics of slumber. People generally wake from sleep, and Bryant expands this occurrence to death. A youth subculture is a youth-based subculture with distinct styles, behaviors, and interests. Youth subcultures offer participants an identity outside of that ascribed by social institutions such as family, work, home and school. It is generally known that subculture is the culture of people, who are dissatisfied with their place in society. One of the first forms of protesting against the society of grown-ups was the HIPPIE movement.The hippie subculture was originally youth movement that began In the united states during the early asses and spread around the world.
